Luke & Leia's Tips for a Great Birthday Party!

  1) The Guest List
We have always found it beneficial to invite friends who will bring their people.
Then you might get a gift. If you’re thinking of inviting children, my advice would be no. Children are just plain noisy and they will compete for our attention and may even try to eat your cake. If someone is trying to convince you to invite cats, our advice again is NO. We’ve heard too many horror stories of catnip-spiked cupcakes.

2) The Location
The backyard is an ideal location for a birthday party. However, have your people use the scooper before your guests arrive, if you know what I mean. If you live in an apartment, keep the group small and in all cases invite only those who will get along “well with others”….(Sorry Leia!, she sometimes gets cranky if someone sniffs her behind). We personally aren’t big fans of hosting events at a local dog run. Too many dogs of questionable character may try to crash your party.

3) The Food
It’s best to order the treats, and cake ahead of time. Have your people do most of the prep a day or so before the party, so they will have more time to sit with you to open your presents when your guests arrive. As for choosing between a sit-down dinner and buffet, it’s really a matter of personal preference. In the sit-down dinner setting you can be sure that there will be some guests who think walking on the table is acceptable and that may cause some outbursts from the humans. And we can tell you from experience that if you choose to have a buffet, it’s better to invite your friends with the shortest snouts. Either way, make sure you have enough for leftovers.

4) The Decorations
If ordering a pinata, make sure there will be a human available to hold a stick and give the pinata a good whack. Otherwise, save your money.
Get some party hats and matching plates (the paper kind that are edible are the best) and stay away from balloons. They aren’t easily digestible if accidentally swallowed!

5) The Party Games
One of our personal favorites, “Red Rover, Red Rover Let Rover Come Over” is always a good choice if no one’s name is actually Rover. “Pin the Tail on the Cat” is also very popular. All you need is a cat, some tape and a rope. “Duck, Duck, Poodle” is popular among younger party-goers (and border collies) because it involves running around in circles.
Another good game to play is “catch the red dot”. This game is played with a laser pointer and can only be played when it gets dark. And be prepared, because you might run into each other trying to catch the red dot.

Note: If your using treats as a prize be aware that there may be some party goers who are treat motivated and will do anything for a treat. They may try to win all the games. Have a rule that you can only win once…..(Sorry Luke!, he’s treat obsessed).
